(Not) By the Numbers

6 years. 50 shows. 10 000 unique website visits. 1 EP. 1 album. 12 singles.

We sure like to measure things don’t we? We’ll slap a number on just about anything you can imagine. And it’s no exageration – see for yourself: go ahead and Google ‘how many grains of rice will fit inside a New York City subway car’ and there will be an answer or a path to one. It’s because we have these little mental number labels attached to the rice and the subway car, each one has a length and width and depth that can be used to calculate their volume. And then it’s just high-school division.

There are many situations where that’s a good, useful, and even necessary thing. For example it makes sense to use a phrase like ‘the subway car is bigger than the grain of rice’. We just need to compare their labels and let the numbers tell the story. We can say things like ‘I can’t afford that TV’ because it describes a situation that can be measured – the number of dollars needed to buy the TV is greater than the number of dollars available to me at the moment. Or we can pin a number label on how many goals a sports team will score against a rival team, and bet money on the outcome of the game. These are all examples of clear and measurable things.

Now, cut scene: there’s a young woman at the rock show, listening to the band on stage. She’d never heard of them before. They’re some local underground band playing in a local underground bar. They’re pretty good, and she’s just bouncing and swaying along with everyone else, when suddenly it happens;.the band plays a song that resonates with her so much she gets goose-bumps, wide-eyed and jaw-dropped as she absorbs this unexpected experience. And when the song is over she’s like ‘what the fuck just happened??’

The live music experience. That’s what just happened. It’s a combination of music being performed in real time by real human beings you can see right there in front of you, mixed in with the lights and the atmosphere, and the the connection created with all the people around you with whom you’re sharing the experience. Experiencing the experience.

How can you put a number on that? How do you quantify an emotion? An experience? Can you imagine trying to come up with an equation or formula for that? Let’s see…take the decibels the music playing at and multiply by the square root of the wattage of the Marshalls? Then add the coefficient of the tempo? Times the number of people in the bar? That’s just being silly, of course, but it does illustrate the point; how can you ever measure such an ethereal but profound effect?

We think you just can’t. You have to experience it. There’s no other way and it’s meaningless to even try to compare one experience to another because they are each separate and unique. That’s the whole point. It’s no wonder the word experience is both a noun and a verb, it is it’s own thing.

And from the band’s point of view, it’s incredibly humbling. It puts the wind in our sails to keep doing it (spoiler alert: it sure ain’t for the money!), and validates our belief that people still appreciate and seek out good music played with passion, integrity and skill. You see, a band writing a song is a lot like one hand clapping, it needs ‘the other’ to be complete. The song needs a listener to complete the circle and it isn’t really finished until it finds one. Publishing music on a streaming platform like Spotify or Apple Music is pretty cool, and super convenient for the listener, but it’s rather like a postponed applause. The reaction is delayed, and the experience is a just a little bit diminished because of it. Live shows put the listener and the musicians in the same space at the same time. The reaction is immediate, and often the bar is small enough that it’s inevitable you’ll run into the band and you can literally just hang out. It’s literally the perfect circle.

If you’ve been out to local indie shows around town you know exactly what we mean. If you haven’t we highly recommend you do. There are plenty of shows to choose from in every genre. It’s almost certain there’s a “What’s happening in town tonight” Facebook group for where you live that will list them all. Pick one. Chances are good you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Here in the Ottawa area, we’re thrilled to carry on the live music tradition at PandaFest III on July 19th, 2024 at Dominion Tavern in the the heart of the ByWard Market. Then on August 9th we’ll be at the White Water Rocks – Summerdaze 2024 festival in Westmeath, Ontario banging out some tunes along with Evil Creek, Beyond Driven, Ginny and the Re-Arrangers, and so many more! Ticket info for both events in the event links above! Go!

We sincerely hope to see you all at one of the upcoming shows, and if we’re not playing we’ll probably be rocking out right beside you cheering on of the many amazing bands here in town.

Until then, rock on and peace out!

November Shenanigans Report

New Logo, New Single, New T-Shirts

Brought to you by the letter N.

Another Halloween has come and gone and the weather’s turning chilly again; you might say Wyntr is coming (sorry, couldn’t resist hehe). It’s no coincidence that just as the days start getting frosty we come out with a brand new logo theme. It’s a brand new twist on the familiar smiling snowflake and we just love it!

Behold:

Smiley Snowflake hasn’t gone anywhere — he’s still around, he just got a makeover and is looking pretty slick don’t you think?

We wanted something that would be instantly recognizable as ‘us’, but with a fresh coat of paint and a new look & feel. We were stoked when we saw the first prints because it was exactly what we were looking for!

This variant combines all the new elements into one. What we’re loving about going with an overall logo theme consisting of multiple elements rather than a single logo pic is how the different elements can be mixed and matched like this, so we can tailor them to fit different contexts. Very cool!

A good example of this is how the new logo theme figures prominently in the promo material for our new single.

OH! That’s right! We have a new single! We started working on a new batch of songs with our main man Cameron Dunn at Hillside Audio and the first one is ready to go! Look for Inside Outside on all the major streaming platforms as of November 28.

And just like it says in the promo pic, to make the release even more exciting, we will have a brand new run of t-shirts specially made to go with the release of Inside Outside. We can’t wait to show those off to you…soon!

Speaking of Halloween we had a phenomenal time at the Pandamonium Promotions Halloween Bash at Dominion Tavern! We were there with Hempress, Sonder, Don’t Tell Sarah, and Radican and it was absolutely bonkers! Thanks again to everyone who came out to make noise with us! It was great to see so many of you there with all the amazing shows going on in town that night. We really appreciate you spending your evening with us.

Our next show is guaranteed to be another total banger and we’re absolutely ecstatic about it. On December 2nd, CHORD Productions presents Dearly Beloved and The Flamingos Pink at Dominion Tavern along with Yarns and we’ll be opening the festivities. Tickets are available right now at dearlybelovedottawa.eventbrite.ca and you should hurry to get yours because they definitely won’t last long!

We’ll be chatting about all of the above and more on the Dawg & Gus Podcast in a couple of weeks and the episode will go live on November 27th — don’t worry, we’ll post the links on all our socials when they’re available.

That’s it for now! Hope you all can join the shenanigans on December 2nd.

Peace

Greetings from Wyntr HQ. Boy are we ever excited! You might already know we just released our latest single The Ballad of Richard Guy and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. But what’s the song called?

How the heck is everyone doing? We hope the last few COVID-19 flavoured months haven’t got you too down. Tis really sucks, we know, but we all do what we can and hope for a positive outcome sooner rather than later.

We’ve been really busy during this time (not really), making sure we stayed productive by finding creative ways to work around lockdown (we were bored). The upside is that we can (finally) tell you that we have a new single coming! We’re shooting for a mid-August release on the Spotifys and who knows, maybe a show not too long after that? Keep your fingers crossed…not saying something might be in the works but something might be in the works 😉

Meanwhile make sure you watch Ryan’s PSA from the wilderness…

“But it was Lorne’s fault.”

Our debut EP is DONE!!

It’s been a long road. Way back in March of 2018 we made our way to Hillside Audio in Ottawa to record some tracks. It was a bit of an uncertain time for us. We were excited to start working on our debut EP but we didn’t have a vocalist at the time, so the recordings would have to remain as instrumental bed tracks until we found one.

Enter Will Andrade. Will came on board that summer and started working on putting vocals down on the tracks. Through the fall and winter of 2018 we had a busy gig and rehearsal schedule and the project was temporarily put on the back burner. We finally got back to recording in the summer of 2019, getting Will’s vocals down on a few tracks, but we ended up parting ways with Will in the fall of 2019 so the EP project was back on hold yet again while we figured out how to move forward.

That’s when Ryan Conway decided (with some friendly urging) that he’d step up to the plate and took on the task of vocals on top of his guitar duties. It was a perfect fit. We spent the November and December of 2019 re-recording all the vocals – with the exception of Ryde. We felt that Will was big part of the band during a period of growth for us and it was important to us that we acknowledge that. As a result the version of Ryde that appears on the EP is the original vocal that Will recorded back in 2018.

We spent January mixing and mastering the EP and we can FINALLY say….IT’S DONE! Check out the tracks on the Music page (they’re all there!). The EP is making its way to the major online stores and should be available on Spotify, Apple Music/iTunes, Google Play and all the others shortly.

We hope you enjoy the music, it’s been a long time coming! There will be a limited run of physical CDs available in the near future as well…stay tuned!
